Too early for Halloween? I don't think so!

How do you make perfect sweet sticky rice?

Making do with no power on a Sunday afternoon, or how I saved my Rhodes Frozen Dinner Rolls.
For our August Relief Society activity, we are repeating our somewhat traditional chili cook-off. Normally, at our house, having chili for dinner means opening a can of Hormel or what-ever-I-got-really-cheap-on-sale other brand. Somehow it seemed wrong to just open a can for tonight, although there was that category available. So I stepped up a little – I even cooked the black beans from scratch, something I rarely do. However, I do have a bunch of cans of dry black beans from the Family Home Storage Center and it would be wise to know how to cook them. I’m sure to have cans of beans on the shelf that are ready to eat – there are days when that is called for. But with just a little preparation – thinking ahead – it’s not a difficult task to cook those little black beauties. So here’s a picture of my recipe…almost looks professional, doesn’t it! Summer Black Bean Chili Serves about 12 – 15 3 cups uncooked black beans (or 4 – 15oz. cans of prepared black beans) 2 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 Tablespoons olive oil 1 large anaheim chili, diced 1 medium onion, chopped 1 1/4 lbs. ground turkey 4 cloves of garlic 2 large ears of fresh corn, cut off the cob 4 – 15 oz. cans crushed tomatoes 3 – 8 oz. cans tomato sauce 1
There is nothing like a troop pulling together to get those Eagle projects done!
A fairly slow day today. Scott and I went to the 99centsonly store, but we didn't find much. I haven't found much lately, which means something good is just about due. It works that way…the good deals come to those that wait and visit often. I don't go as often as I used to before Megan found her new job, but if I have another reason to go up to the Square, I'm definitely going to go early so I don't miss out. Today's double-duty trip was for crickets for the critters. I've been playing around with making ribbon roses after I saw a Ribbon Roses tutorial on YouTube. No matter how hard I try though, I can't get mine to look like hers. But I like the way mine turned out…maybe it's the kind of ribbon I'm using, not that I'm having trouble following directions! Maybe I'll make my own tutorial:) Did you notice my funny "e"? I ran out of the letter "e" a long time ago! Actually I was out of the letter "i" as well. So I cut up 2 unused "j"s – and crossed a "c" with part of one. Make it do or do without! I have decided that I will never finish my scrapbooking. There will always be more photos to make pages with, thoughts to write down…even if I were to stop the world – or even
Safe and sound! Since I didn't go, I'll let the pictures tell the story. There will be more photos to come, once they are downloaded/developed, but for now…this will have to suffice! Hans, Sam D., Tom D., Steven and Jake. Gabe, Daniel, Forrest,Warren, and Joseph. Jerry, Tom and Nick on left, Sam R., Max and Mike on right. Scott on left, Ernie and Thomas F. on right…plus another couple of strangers in the back:) This is the really old guys raft! Here we have Wesley, Ceasar, Gabe and Cyrus! These photos are from Mountain & River Adventures. There will be more to come from other attendees of the trip. I think that it would have been totally "fair" if I would have been able to go off to CHA or some crafty retreat. Instead, I got to face my own dangerous adventure…cleaning my workroom! All parties survived.
Yesterday, I sent out the link for 2 for $10 entrees at Pei Wei…and made my own trip there for dinner with the girls. Good friends (daughters included), good deal, good food and good laughs – there were even good leftovers! But before the dinner was even started, there was good news. For those of you that go to Pei Wei – really quick, really good, kind-of like PF Chang food – you know that you serve yourself drinks, gather your own silverware and pick up your own fortune cookies. Imagine that – a huge basket of fortune cookies, hundreds of them, there for the taking. Our group considers that an appetizer so a handful goes back to our table with us. Anyway, the motto is that we keep eating them until we find one we like or get full and have to take our whole meal home. I was feeling a little adventurous last night, and I hadn't eaten for HOURS, so I decided to keep eating until I got a bad one. I don't know if that's technically legal as far as the fortune cookie deal goes. But here are my fortunes: I know, I know…4 is more than enough fortune cookies. Let's break these down. 1. I need to figure out what I need to start now. 2. I LOVE to receive special things in large packages. 3.
